Motorola’s Moto G5 Review: Initial Impressions and Details

The Moto G was a turning point in Motorola’s stalling growth, making it the most selling Motorola made Smartphone ever. Despite its budget pricing, hardware specifications, and features, what really made the Moto G successful was what was offered to the customers for the price they paid. The Moto G was the first true bang-for-the-buck Android Smartphone in the market that later lead to the growing trend in awesome budget Android Smartphones that we can see today. The latest Moto G5 continues this legacy of the Moto G series and brings the best you can get for your money in 2017. We first saw the Moto G5 and its sibling the Moto G5 Plus at the MWC event in Barcelona a few weeks back, and now we have both of these Smartphones officially in India.

Today we are here with our initial impressions and details of Moto G5 Android Smartphone.

Moto G5 Review

Last month we shared the leaked specs of Motorola’s Moto G5 Device and those specs are matching the real! Before we take a look at the device, let us run down through the main hardware specifications of the Moto G5.

Hardware Specifications:

1. 5.0-inch 1080x1920pixel Full-HD display with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection.
2. Snapdragon 430 chipset clocked at 1.4GHz.
3. 2GB RAM+16GB inbuilt storage or 3GB RAM+32GB inbuilt storage.
4. MicroSD card slot for storage expansion up to an additional 256GB.
5. 13MP primary camera with f/2.0 aperture, phase detection autofocus and LED flash.
6. 5 MP secondary camera with f/2.2 aperture.
7. Front mounted fingerprint scanner.
8. 2800mAh battery.
9. Color options are Lunar Grey and Fine Gold.

Hardware Review of Moto G5:

After four generations of Moto G Smartphones, we finally have a metal built with the Moto G5. And the built quality does feel evolved and better than the previous generation Moto G Smartphones.

The front portion of the Moto G5 features the earpiece and the front-facing 5MP camera sensor at the top, beneath it the 5.0 inches Full-HD display and in between them the Moto branding. Below the display lies the fingerprint scanner and the mono loudspeaker.

The right edge of the Moto G5 features the power and volume keys, whereas the left side features the Dual-SIM tray which can also be used to pop in a MicroSD card. The bottom has the MicroUSB port for charging and syncing, and there is also a 3.5mm headphone jack at the top of the device.

To the rear of the device, we see the 13MP primary camera with its dual-LED flash along with a branding bottom of the camera lens.

Performance Review of Moto G5:

The Moto G5 will run Android version 7.0 Nougat out of the box. Even though the launcher and all the features of Android Nougat will be available, you will also be able to see some Motorola custom features like the Moto Display throughout the software experience.

Talking about the hardware performance of the device, the 1.4GHz Snapdragon 430 processor along with either 2GB or 3GB of RAM (depending on the variant) is fair enough to enjoy the complete Android experience including high end gaming, multitasking and more.

The Moto G5 can swift through graphic intense games without a sweat and the same applies to multitasking as well.

Camera Review of Moto G5:

The 13MP primary+5MP secondary camera setup is a standard on every budget Smartphones these days. However, the camera output largely depends on software optimisation.

Motorola was not previously well-known for the camera performance on their devices, but recently they have been working hard to give a best in class performance out of the camera on their devices as well.

The image quality of both the front and rear camera units on the Moto G5 is decent enough in almost every situations, except with the lighting is too dark. The image output is crisp and the color accuracy is better than ever. When the lighting condition gets challenging, you may see noise but it is understandable given the device’s pricing.

The 2800mAh battery on the Moto G5 is the only complain we have about the device. When competing devices have over 3500mAh battery, the Moto G5 will fail in terms of endurance. With average use, the Moto G5 should last you an entire day. But will fall short when compared to other similarly priced Smartphones.

Final Words:

The Moto G5 keeps the legacy of the Moto G series active by offering some of the best hardware and software experience in a very pocket-friendly pricing. The only bummer with the device should be its battery, if that doesn’t matter then the Moto G5 is indeed worth the money.
