In today’s world, our smart phones are the efficient source to keep track of all things. From photos to videos or important office documents to PPTs files, our phone memory is the ultimate rescue. Not for much surprise, our phone memory includes that little BLACK card, known as MEMORY CARD slotted against the back side of the phone. MEMORY CARD or a flash card is an electronic data storage device used for storing digital information. Memory cards were introduced around 1990 when technology in mobile phones and the digital camera began to evolve. It is said to be invented by ROLAND MORENO in 1982. They contain chips of a type of computer memory called Flash memory, a technology first developed by Toshiba in the 1980s.
Initially, Compact Flash cards were first to be introduced by SanDisk in 1994. There are two types of CF cards mainly –Type 1 and Type2. Then gradually, Smart Media cards were introduced which couldn’t make their way that much due to their insufficient storage leading to the development of xD-Picture card in 2002. As in-built storage on phones is very low, on average around 10 MB, the need for extra storage came about and so the memory card, the SD card came into limelight.
Before that SanDisk, Matsushita, Toshiba agreed to develop and market the SD card. The card was derived from the Multimedia Card and provided digital rights management. It was designed to compete with the Memory Stick, a DRM product that SONY had released a year before. Then came the miniSD form as a small factor extension to the SD card standard. Along with mini SD came mini SDHC supporting some devices only. Since 2008, miniSD were no longer produced and MICRO SD paved their way.

What is a micro SD card?
Secure Digital (SD) cards were launched in 1999 by Panasonic, Toshiba having the ability to store encrypted music data. They are extremely popular, and are used in the majority of compact digital cameras, and also in several consumer DSLRs and even in video cameras, music players and mobile phones. It is a non-volatile memory card format developed by the SD card association.
SD includes 4 card families available in three different sizes. The four are the original Standard-Capacity (SDSC), the High-Capacity (SDHC), the extended-Capacity ( SDXC), and the SDIO, which combines input/output functions with data storage. The three form factors are the original size, the mini size, and the micro size. The SD card’s small footprint is an ideal storage medium for smaller, thinner and more portable electronic devices.
Initially, their size varied from 1MB TO 125MB. SDHC being less than 2GB and greater than 32 GB. But now their size varying up to 32 GB offering a large amount of storage space to store your files and documents. Also, these cards are reusable such that when any content is copied from PC to card that can be easily deleted and can be copied again.
SD card speed relatively rated by its sequential read or write speed. Small data falls under the much lower speed limit of random access, which can be the limiting factor in some cases.
Some of the notable features include –
CARD SECURITY
Cards can protect their contents from erasure or modification, prevent access by non –authorized users, and protect copyrighted content. Also, the data can be erased and even copied again as and when required.
COMMAND TO DISABLE WRITE
The host device can even command the SD card to become read only. There is both reversible and irreversible host that commands this.
Also, while talking about other SD cards TransFlash memory card definitely makes their way in. Now the other question which arises is “What the main diff. btw TF Card and microSD Card?
What is a TF card and What is a TF card used for?
“The microSD removable miniaturised secure Digital flash memory cards were originally named T –Flash or TF, also commonly called TransFlash.”
They are functionally identical allowing either to operate in devices made for the other. So if you want to search for TF cards, opt for SDHC cards. Moreover, this new wholesale priced microSD card for cell phones allows you to expand the memory in your mobile so you can load more images and music.
The storage capacity of TF card varies from 128 MB, 256 MB, 512 MB, 1GB, 2GB, 4 GB, 6GB, 8GB, 16 GB, 32 GB and 64 GB as well. Also, TF card can be used for a tablet as this is the cheapest 16 GB micro SD card that could be found. The Trans flash card can be used to safely store your files (movies, songs, and eBooks)
Though it might look simple to read about SD and TF cards in realities many people often feel confused about two of these cards whether they are identical or different. So the most frequent question that often seeks its answers is –
Are TF memory Card and micro SD Memory cards same? Or any difference?
TF card or TransFlash card is generally used for its micro secure digital cards and was considered to be the world’s smallest memory card. Both the cards are very much alike and can be used in place of one other but there is a little dissimilarity which sets them different from each other.
- MicroSD cards can perform non-memory jobs such as GPS, Bluetooth and near field Communication. But a TransFlash cannot do such non-memory jobs.
- There is also a switch on security segment in SD card whereas no such feature is found in TransFlash.
- The volume of SD card is comparatively more than TF card.
- TF card can support 64 GB as well which microSD card doesn’t.
The differences between the two are not many as both the cards are considered same but later TransFlash was named as a microSD card by SanDisk Corporation. These TF Card and microSD Card are legendary ones that helped us a lot on various situations.
